El Centro Comunitario de Educación is a non-profit organization comprised of volunteer students whose mission is to empower immigrants in their communities.
El Centro Comunitario de Educación was founded in 2005 and has since been growing and evolving to meet the needs of its community.
Through the availability of free English, Computer, GED, and Citizenship classes, we hope to empower immigrants to play an active role in their community and ensure their own well-being.
Intern teachers at El Centro are chosen by Syosset High School World Language teacher Ms. Ramos-Velita and by previous interns. Almost all have been Sra. Ramos-Velita's World Language students during their junior year.
We have a living curriculum, and our teachers create lessons specific to their individual students' needs. We pride ourselves on teaching what our students can benefit most from, whatever that may be - regular conversational English, formal interview skills, vocabulary for around the house, the classroom, or school.
Besides teaching classes, high school interns at El Centro organize immigration workshops and plan community events at Ascension Lutheran Church. After their first semester, previous interns become mentors for a new group of teachers, facilitating teacher-training workshops and planning program events.
